Psychological Safety lives between and within us

Psychological safety is a team construct, yet it also has an inner dimension and is sustained by the capacity for individual regulation.

That distinction matters more than we often realise.

Amy Edmondson’s work fundamentally reshaped how we understand learning, speaking up, and performance in teams. Psychological safety, in that sense, lives between people. In interaction, norms, and relational behaviour.

And yet, in complex organisational environments, something else becomes visible.
Under pressure, psychological safety doesn’t disappear.. It is tested. What sustains it in those moments is not intention or protocol, but the inner capacity of leaders and teams to stay regulated, reflective, and connected. This is where Embodied Psychological Safety (EPS) extends the conversation.

EPS understands psychological safety as a living system, shaped by the continuous interaction between:
Regulation. The grounded body’s ability to stay present under stress;
Relation. The quality of the relational field between people;
Reflection. The capacity to examine assumptions, patterns, and defensive habits.

These three dimensions never operate in isolation. They are continuously influenced by a fourth layer: The cultural and systemic context of the organisation, leadership norms, structures, incentives, and what is rewarded or avoided.

Inner work shapes how leaders show up in relationships.
Relational patterns reinforce culture.
And culture feeds back into the nervous systems of leaders and teams. Day after day. This is why Embodied Psychological Safety is not a technique to apply, but a system to cultivate.

And why Presence sits at the centre: The capacity to remain grounded, connected, and clear while navigating inner states, relational dynamics, and systemic pressures at once.

So the leadership question becomes:
How much psychological safety can your leadership sustain when pressure rises?

If you want to explore how regulation, relation, reflection, and culture interact in your leadership or organisation. I work with leaders and teams through coaching and systemic interventions to support that development.
